Sterile injectable drug development and manufacturing on the increase for glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) drugs – how coated plungers and coated stoppers can aid your drug development

Sterile injectable drug development and manufacturing is on the rise and @ConservaUK we are seeing steadily increasing requirements specifically for glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) drugs.

GLP-1 medications are used to manage blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes and to help treat obesity. They mimic the actions of the endogenous incretin hormone GLP-1, which is released by the gut after eating.

GLP-1 is involved in stimulating secretion of insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels, and suppressing a hormone called glucagon, which can help reduce hunger.

Typically, we see GLP-1 drugs packaged in three main formats:

  • Pre-filled Syringes: These are common for injectable GLP-1 drugs. The syringes are pre-filled with the medication, making them convenient and easy to use for patients.
  • Cartridges: Some GLP-1 drugs come in cartridges that are used with reusable injection pens. This allows for multiple doses from a single cartridge.
  • Vials: For some formulations, the medication is provided in vials, and patients or healthcare providers use a separate syringe to draw up and administer the dose.

Across all three delivery formats Conserva UK can help and assist with key primary packaging materials for the development of new drugs through to commercial manufacturing of them.

A key area that drives a lot of interest specifically on new GLP-1 drug development projects is our ranges of fluoropolymer spray coated plungers (Neoflex) for prefilled syringes and cartridges and stoppers (Omniflex) for vial requirements.

Both the stoppers and plungers are coated using the exact same spray coating technology, with 100% coverage of the component.  The OmniFlex stoppers and NeoFlex plungers are compatible with most standard vials, syringes, and cartridges on the market.

Using this fluoropolymer spray coating technology offers an unrivalled break loose force and glide performance and with a low coefficient of friction, no siliconisation is needed.

Our coated plungers and stoppers can help reduce overall particle counts. The proprietary coating provides a protective barrier against external contaminants, prevents leachables from entering the product and ensures a contact-safe surface that is compatible with the drug.

Available in both ready to use (RTU) and ready for sterilisation (RfS) Conserva UK have the right solution to meet your requirements.
